OCTAVO SPOTLIGHT
Ave Maria Arranged: Robert G. Farrell
This new setting of the Ave Maria for SATB chorus and organ enhances the original chant, adding rich harmonies and polyphonic textures. Though not an easy piece, the skillful voice-leading makes this accessible for moderately experienced choirs. In key phrases, Farrell uses parallel motion to evoke the effect of ancient organum. Other times, the texture is imitative, to underscore the meaning. When the organ accompanies the choir, it is supportive, and for rehearsal of the most intricate a cappella section, an organ reduction is provided.
